Independant Driving
The Beep Beep Club

The New Practical Test October 2010
The DSA hav introduced new elements to the test. You need not worry, The Beep Beep Club Instructors have the latest information so we can teach you accordingly. We appreciate it is YOUR practical driving test and The Beep Beep Club will support and explain all changes fully.
Historically the examiner would give you full directional instruction i.e. turn left/turn right, continuously throughout the route. The DSA believe this promotes a prompted reaction in the drivers mind and the driver then begins the MSPSL routine. They believe this is not a safe method for drivers and they will in the new test 2010 be testing applicants on their INDEPENDENT driving skills. Therefore putting the emphasis on you as the driver to use the MSPSL routine independently when approaching junctions/hazards. They believe it is a truer reflection of your ability to control a vehicle safely when you are alone in the car. As you will be driving alone after passing the L Test.
During the test for a 10 minute slot there will be an "Independant Drive" which will involve the Examiner either asking you to follow the signs to a specific destination, i.e. follow the signs for the town centre, or giving you a pictoral diagram and 3 instructions i.e. take the first left, second right and then the first left again. You will be expected to read the road signs or remember the directions and negotiate the route remembering to use the MSPSL routine at all junctions/hazards. Remember you are being tested on your ability as a driver to independantly use the MSPSL routines without being prompted. If you do forget an instruction you may ask the examiner again, or if you take an incorrect turn, providing you make that turn correctly using the routine, you will not be penalised.
This was a bold step for the DSA and one which The Beep Beep Club feel will make Learner Drivers safer in the long term. It will also improve your judgement and decision making skills, which can only strengthen your own self confidence about your ability as a newly qualified driver.
The DSA are also altering the new test 2010 by the way in which they test your manoeuvring skills. You will only be asked to undertake one of the four manoeuvres. Either a Bay Park, Turn in the Road, Left Corner Reverse or a Parallel Park.
